From Allu Arjun to Darshan Thoogudeepa: Actors Who Landed in Legal Trouble

The South Indian film industry has long been home to some of the biggest stars in Indian cinema. While their on-screen personas often depict heroism and charm, real life has sometimes painted a different picture. Several prominent actors have found themselves entangled in legal controversies, facing serious allegations that have led to FIRs, arrests, and prolonged court battles. From criminal accusations to financial disputes, these legal troubles reveal the darker side of fame, where stardom does not shield one from the consequences of the law.

Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa faced serious allegations in June 2024 following the death of a fan named Renukaswamy. The young man's body was discovered near a stormwater drain in Sumanahalli, with post-mortem reports indicating death due to multiple blunt injuries. Investigations led to Darshan's arrest on June 11, 2024, after it emerged that Renukaswamy had been lured under false pretences, allegedly tortured, and killed. The motive was reportedly linked to offensive messages sent to actress Pavithra Gowda, who is believed to share a close association with Darshan. He was granted bail in the case after being in custody for several months. The actor reportedly resumed shooting for his next film, The Devil.

Malayalam actor Dileep has been under scrutiny since February 2017, when a fellow actress was abducted and reportedly assaulted in Kochi. By July of that year, Dileep was arrested on charges of orchestrating the attack due to personal animosities. He spent six months in custody before securing bail. The case has seen multiple twists, with allegations surfacing that Dileep offered a significant sum to execute the assault, further complicating the legal proceedings. The Kerala High Court has scheduled the hearing for Dileep’s plea requesting a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe in the case on April 7.

Actress Hansika Motwani and her mother, Jyoti Motwani, have approached the Bombay High Court seeking to quash a cruelty case filed against them by Hansika's sister-in-law, Muskan James. Muskan, who married Hansika's brother Prashant in December 2020, filed an FIR in December 2024 alleging cruelty and intimidation. Hansika and her mother were granted anticipatory bail in February 2025. They contend that the accusations are retaliatory, stemming from a financial dispute over a loan Hansika provided for the couple's wedding expenses.

Veteran Malayalam actor Mohanlal has been entangled in legal proceedings since 2011 after elephant tusks were found in his Kochi residence during an Income Tax raid. Charged under the Wildlife Protection Act for unauthorised possession, Mohanlal maintained that he legally acquired the tusks. Despite obtaining a certificate of ownership in 2015 and a no-objection certificate in 2020, courts have questioned the validity of these documents, leading to prolonged legal battles.

Allu Arjun was arrested on December 13, 2024 after a female fan lost her life due to a stampede during the Pushpa 2 premiere at Sandhya Theatre in Hyderabad. He was released from jail the day after his arrest, after the Telangana High Court granted him interim bail for four weeks. The actor later visited the deceased's family and expressed deep sorrow over the incident. A 35-year-old woman died, and her eight-year-old son was injured in the stampede; her husband lodged a complaint against the theatre owners and management. The actor later offered financial assistance for their treatment and further needs.
