It’s been over 13 years since actor-singer-lyricist Andrea Jeremiah made her silver screen debut with Gautham Menon’s Tamil film Pachaikili Muthucharam and yet, she is going great guns with a bunch of Tamil projects in her kitty. Besides acting, the 34-year-old leggy lass is a professional playback singer and lyricist. She also writes poems, composes music and performs live in music concerts. Last seen in Vetrimaaran’s Vada Chennai (2018), Andrea is set to have a busy 2020 with big-ticket Tamil films like Vijay’s Master, Kaa, Vattam and Maaligai.
In recent times, the Tamil Nadu belle took her own music off the screens and onto stage. She has been giving live shows with Leon James, Keba Jeremiah, keyboardist Karthik Joseph, percussionist Krishna Kishore and bassist Naveen: together they call themselves The Jeremiah Project. Andrea Jeremiah dreamt of becoming a psychiatrist
Born into an Anglo-Indian Roman Catholic family, Andrea completed her schooling and graduation in Chennai. At the age of 10, she became an integral part of Jackson Five-style troupe ‘Young Stars’ and learned the basic aspects of singing and music composing. She was also a theatre artist in college and has appeared in several stage plays organised by The Madras Players and Evam. After kicking-off her stage career with Girish Karnad's ‘Nagamandala’, she ventured into modelling, TV serials, playback singing and eventually acting.
Gautham Menon turned Andrea Jeremiah into an actor
Andrea started off her film journey as a singer by crooning a soulful number in Gautham Menon’s neo-noir thriller Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu. Impressed by her talent, beauty and screen-presence, the versatile director requested Andrea to play the leading lady in his next film ‘Pachaikili Muthucharam’. She scored full marks for her impressive portrayal as a housewife whose husband engages in an affair and is blackmailed. She was selected for the role after actresses Simran, Shobana and Tabu were approached. In the 2010 adventure-drama ‘Yuganiki Okkadu’, the damsel pulled off the complex role of Lavanya with ease. Since then, she has featured in several films opposite all the A-list stars of Tamil cinema.
Successful singer with a string of chartbusters in her kitty
Andrea started her playback career with the superhit ‘Nokia’ song from Shankar’s 2005 film Anniyan. In her second outing itself, she rendered for music director ‘Rockstar’ Devi Sri Prasad for the Siddharth & Genelia starrer ‘Bommarillu’. In a successful singing career spanning for over a decade, she crooned several songs in Telugu and Tamil which turned out to be chartbusters. Apart from singing, she also composed several themes, songs, and independent albums. She also donned the hat of a dubbing artist for a few flicks.
Diagnosed with acute depression in 2019 and took a break to recover from it
In August 2019, Andrea Jeremiah revealed that she was diagnosed with acute depression and had to recover from it before getting back to work. According to a report in Indiaglitz, the actress revealed that she was involved in a relationship with a married man who went on to abuse her mentally and physically. Due to this, she suffered from acute depression and had to enrol in an Ayurveda detox program take a brief to recover from it.
