Epic tales transformed through decades of myth, magic and might

Through aesthetically stunning fantasy films, Telugu cinema has traditionally excelled in telling epic tales of magic, mythology, and heroism. From legendary epics like ‘Baahubali’ and ‘Adipurush’ to unique stories like ‘Magadheera’ and ‘Bimbisara’, these movies transport audiences into worlds of valor, reincarnation, and divine battles between good and evil.

‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ (2015)

‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ follows the life of a carefree village boy, Shivudu, who embarks on an epic journey that uncovers his royal bloodline and a hidden legacy. As he climbs the impossible cliff, he discovers the hidden kingdom of Mahishmati, where he learns about the injustice faced by his parents as well as uncovers the mystery behind the death of his father, Amrendra Bahubaali, and the story of the feared Bhallaladeva. Known for its grand visuals and epic battle scenes, the movie redefined Indian cinema.

‘Magadheera’ (2009)

‘Magadheera’ is a reincarnation-based fantasy movie, which follows the life of Harsha, a motorcycle stuntman, who gets visions of his past life as Kala Bhairava, a brave warrior. 400 years ago, he bravely protected Princess Mithravinda Devi, but lost his life during a battle with his rival, Raghuveer. The rivalry is revived, and the lovers are reunited by fate in the present. Harsha must embrace his destiny and complete what he couldn’t in his past life. Telugu fantasy film standards were set by ‘Magadheera’, which featured gripping action and supernatural elements.

‘Bimbisara’ (2022)

‘Bimbisara’ is an action-drama that follows the story of Bimbisara, a ruthless and power-hungry king from the 5th century. He accidentally travels to the present day through a magical mirror. Bimbisara is initially brutal and arrogant, but he is eventually redeemed after facing moral dilemmas in this new world. Balancing past conflicts and present challenges, he confronts destiny while uncovering hidden truths. Packed with time travel, magic, and action, ‘Bimbisara’ delivers a thrilling mix of fantasy and historical drama.

‘Ammoru’ (1995)

Bhavani, a devoted servant of Goddess Ammoru, is at the center of the famous Telugu mythical fantasy ‘Ammoru’. When a powerful sorcerer threatens her life and village, the goddess takes human form to protect Bhavani and destroy evil. The film highlights the power of faith, fierce battles between good and evil, and divine miracles. Ammoru continues to be a popular Telugu film in the fantasy and devotional genre because of its spiritual themes, powerful performances, and modern visual effects.

‘Adipurush’ (2023)

Inspired by the Hindu epic tale of ‘Ramayana’, ‘Adipurush’ is a mythological fantasy-action featuring Prabhas as Raghava (Lord Rama), Kriti Sanon as Janaki (Sita), and Saif Ali Khan as Lankesh (Ravana). The movie narrates Raghava’s battle against Lankesh to rescue Janaki, with the help of Hanuman and his Vanara army. The film reimagines the classic story of good vs evil, bravery, and righteousness in a fantasy setting, complete with large-scale battles, modern visual effects, and spiritual overtones.
