Bhumika Chawla Birthday Special: 7 Foot-Tapping Telugu Songs of the ‘Kushi’ actress

During the early 2000s, Bhumika Chawla enjoyed the status of a “dream girl” for the majority of youngsters in the Telugu states. One among the few actresses to have a perfect blend of attractive looks, ravishing screen-presence and solid acting chops, the Delhi beauty achieved overnight stardom with the 2001 blockbuster Kushi starring Pawan Kalyan in the lead role. The romantic entertainer also brought her maiden Filmfare award as the Best Actress.With superhit films like Okkadu, Missamma and Simhadri, she grabbed her big Bollywood break in 2013 with Salman Khan’s ‘Tere Naam’ and subsequently appeared in a few Hindi films like ‘Run’, ‘Dil Ne Jise Apna Kahaa’ and ‘Silsiilay’.
After playing the female lead for more than a decade, the 42-year-old actress took a brief break and kicked-off her second innings in Tollywood with Nani’s MLA. She also portrayed pivotal roles in ‘U Turn’, Naga Chaitanya’s ‘Savyasachi’ and Nandamuri Balakrishna’s ‘Ruler’. At present, she is essaying the role of Gopichand’s sister in Sampath Nandi’s Seetimaarr starring Tamannaah Bhatia as the leading lady.
Born as Rachana Chawla into a Punjabi Army family, the Delhi beauty moved to Mumbai in 1997 to pursue her dreams of becoming an actress. She married her long-time boyfriend, Yoga Guru Bharat Thakur in 2007 after dating him for nearly four years. The couple is blessed with a boy. All songs composed by Mani Sharma for ‘Kushi’ turned out to become instant chartbusters and as soon as the film got released, they went on to create a rage in the theaters. Especially, ‘Ammaye Sannaga’ crooned by the evergreen duo of Udit Narayan and Kavita Krishnamurthy hit the bull’s eye with all sectors of moviegoers and went on to garner a cult following over the years.


Sung by Shreya Ghoshal and composed by Mani Sharma, “Nuvvemmaya Chesavokaani” is the introductory number of Bhumika in Okkadu. Starring Mahesh Babu as the protagonist, the high-octane actioner directed by Gunasekhar recorded a monstrous box-office hit in 2003 with eight Nandi Awards and four Filmfare Awards in its kitty. The film follows the journey of a Kabaddi player, Ajay who rescues Swapna from factionist Obul Reddy, when the latter tries to forcefully marry her.


The fast-paced number voiced by KK and Swarnalatha turned into a chartbuster even before the film hit the theaters. Bhumika’s glamourous avatar, Venkatesh’s stylish dance moves and the glittering setup made this song a visual treat for the viewers. Though the film ended up as an average grosser, all songs of Vasu composed by Harris Jayaraj turned out to be superhits.


Bowled over by her impressive emoting skills, SS Rajamouli roped in Bhumika Chawla as the female lead opposite Junior NTR in the 2003 blockbuster ‘Simhadri’. Her performance in the role of a mentally-challenged girl Indu received a big thumbs-up from the audience and critics. She also pulled off some terrific dance moves in the mass number “Nuvvu Whistlesthe” alongside Tarak and Ankitha.
