The Flawless Diva, Gorgeous Beauty and Sparkling Star of Indian Cinema

Divya Bharti was one of the best things that happened to Indian cinema during the late 80s and early 90s. With her cute looks, arresting screen-presence, convincing acting chops and uncanny resemblance to the legendary Sridevi, the young actress didn’t take much time to acquire fame and stardom in the showbiz world. Failing to create an impact in modelling, Divya Bharti forayed into cinema at the age of 16 and made her acting debut opposite Venkatesh in the 1990 Telugu film ‘Bobbili Raja’. After a couple of glorious years down South, the talented starlet became an overnight star in Bollywood after playing the leading lady in ‘Vishwatma’.

From then on, there has been no looking back for this Mumbai-born beauty in the glamour arena. With 11 releases to her credit in a span of 15 months, she became one among the few most-sought-after actresses of her generation. Very much like Hollywood superstar Marilyn Monroe, this rising star breathed her last in a tragic way and her death had all the ingredients of a dark crime thriller. While Marilyn was 36, the Indian heroine was just 19. As we remember the flawless beauty on her 45th birth anniversary, let’s check out some of her career-defining moments.

Missed Opportunity opposite Govinda in ‘Radha Ka Sangam’

During her ninth grade in school, Divya Bharti was spotted by Kriti Kumar at a video library and the filmmaker decided to cast her opposite Govinda in ‘Radha Ka Sangam’. After prepping up for the role by taking rigorous training in acting and dancing, she was eventually dropped and replaced by Juhi Chawla. Though the reasons remained unclear, Bharti confessed in an interview that Kriti Kumar’s over-possessiveness and demanding nature was the reason for her exit. Later, she romanced Govinda in back-to-back films like ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’ and ‘Jaan Se Pyaara’.

Blockbuster Outings in Tollywood

Failing to create an impact in modelling, Divya was looking to explore new opportunities on the silver screen. During this juncture, noted producer D Ramanaidu casted the ravishing belle opposite his son Venkatesh in ‘Bobbili Raja’. Released in 1990, the action-romance went on to become a monstrous hit at the ticket counters with glowing praises to Divya Bharti’s fabulous screen-presence. The following year, she joined the big league of Telugu cinema after acquiring successive blockbusters with ‘Rowdy Alludu’ opposite Chiranjeevi and Mohan Babu’s ‘Assembly Rowdy’.

Bollywood Call and Overnight Stardom

While enjoying the massive craze in South Cinema, the young actress was approached with several offers from Bollywood filmmakers. Despite opening to mixed reviews, Bharti’s maiden Hindi flick ‘Vishwatma’ gained wide recognition for the leggy lass. Especially, her cute expressions and dance moves in the popular ‘Saat Samundar Paar’ song developed a cult following over the years. With ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’ in 1992, she earned her maiden blockbuster in Hindi cinema and went on to star in several successful films. In the same year, Divya delivered her career-best performance in the Shah Rukh Khan and Rishi Kapoor starrer ‘Deewana’. Critics reported that Bharti belonged to a new breed of Hindi film actors who broke away from character stereotypes.

Unbroken Bollywood Record

Between 1992 and 1993, Divya Bharti starred in a total of 11 Hindi films which is still an unbroken record in Bollywood. At the time of her death, she had multiple projects in her kitty. The estimated loss suffered by the film industry due to Bharti’s death was approximately Rs. 2 crores. The incident left more than five film producers in a lurch with the status of their films in a dilemma. Despite managing to find a replacement, these films didn’t perform well at the box-office.

Personal Life and Shocking Death at just 19

After meeting director-producer Sajid Nadiadwala during the shooting of ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’, Divya Bharti fell in love with him and the couple tied the knot on 10 May 1992. Shockingly, the promising diva died under mysterious circumstances on the night of April 5th, 1993. Reports suggest that she accidentally fell down from a five-storied building in Versova Mumbai. After her death, many conspiracies started to circulate among the media and fans which include falling under the influence of alcohol, being pushed by someone, suicide, and the involvement of her husband with the underworld. The investigation was closed in 1998 and the reason was stated as ‘accidental death’.

Even after 25 years since her demise, Divya Bharti stays alive in our memories owing to her cute looks, dazzling screen-presence, natural beauty and immense talent!
