​Tamil directors who gave disasters with straight Telugu films and stars!

When Tamil films are dubbed into Telugu, Kollywood filmmakers have seen great success, but when they make a direct Telugu film, things are different. When it comes to making straight Telugu films using Telugu actors and superstars, a number of Tamil directors have failed and there are more than ten examples to support the claim. Here's a list of Tamil directors who have failed miserably with Tollywood actors.

​Venkat Prabhu - 'Custody'

Tamil film director Venkat Prabhu, who tasted success in Tamil cinema with films such as 'Maanaadu' (2021), 'Mankantha' (2011), and 'Chennai 600026' (2007), tasted moderate success by dubbing the mentioned films in Telugu, but the same was not the case when he made a bilingual with Naga Chaitanya recently that failed to pull crowds at both the languages box offices...!

​LinguSamy - 'The Warrior'

The very emotional and talented Tamil filmmaker Lingusamy tried his luck and hand in Telugu cinema by making a bilingual film, ‘The Warriorr (2022)," with Ram Pothineni and Krithi Shetty (in both of their Tamil film debuts). But the film failed to impress both the English and French audiences.

​KV Guhan - 'Highway','WWW'

Cinematographer K.V. Guhan, who worked as a cinematographer for a number of Telugu stars and directors, tried his hand and luck at film direction and directed ‘Highway’ with Anand Deverakonda and ‘WWW," a computer-screened thriller film, as a bilingual, but due to their illogical scenes and mindless storytelling, both the films bombed at the Tollywood box office.

​Hari-Harish-'Yashoda'

Tamil film makers Hari-Harish, who made ‘Yashoda’ with Samantha in the lead role too, failed to impress the Telugu audience. The action thriller concept and story telling failed to impress Telugu audiences, and the film was released as a pan-India film in multiple languages.

​Ranjit Jeyakodi - 'Michael'

Another Tamil director named Ranjit Jeyakodi, who made a neo-noir action thriller bilingual film with Sundeep Kishan in the lead and Vijay Sethupathi, Divyansha Kaushik, Gautam Vasudev Menon, and Varun Sandesh in other important roles, was a box-office disaster in both states.

​Anand Shankar -'NOTA’

The 2018 Tamil political thriller film by Anand Shankar starred Vijay Deverakonda in the lead role. Like the above directors, this filmmaker also tried to launch Vijay in Tamil, but the film that revolved around Varun, the son of the Chief Minister, who rises to his father’s position after corruption charges were brought against him', was bombed at both box offices, and it carried mixed to negative reviews at the Tollywood box office.

​A.R. Murugadoss -'Spyder', 'Stalin'


Yet another Tamil-Telugu bilingual action thriller film, ‘Spyder," written and directed by AR. Murugadoss with Mahesh Babu and Rakul Preet Singh in the lead roles, is produced by south producer NV Prasad, and the film bombed at the box office despite having master technicians of the craft such as A.Sreekar Prasad, dialogues written by Paruchuri Brothers, and the film camera cranked by Santosh Sivan. Murugadoss's debut Telugu film with Chiranjeevi, ‘Stalin," was also a box-office tragedy.

​Gautam Vasudev Menon - 'Yeto Vellipoyindi Manasu'

Tamil and Malayalam movie director Gautham Vasudev Menon, who predominantly works in the Tamil film industry, gave a box-office dud in Tollywood with Natural star Nani and Samantha Ruth Prabhu titled ‘Yeto Velli Poyindi Manasu’.

​P.Vasu - 'Nagavalli', 'Maharadhi'

The 2010 Telugu horror comedy film written and directed by P. Vasu and produced by Bellamkonda Suresh got mixed reviews for its routine content and storylines, and the film wasn’t very successful at the box office despite being the director’s own remake of his 2010 film ‘Aptharakshaka’ and serving as a standalone sequel to the Tamil film ‘Chandrabmukhi (2005). His other film in 2007, titled ‘Maharathi," was also a box office disaster.

KS Ravi Kumar – ‘Ruler’ & ‘Bava Nachadu’

Top Kollywood director KS Ravi Kumar, who gave several blockbusters in Tamil Nadu, failed to repeat the same with Balakrishna in ‘Ruler." The film, which starred actors such as Vedhika, Sonal Chauhan, and Bhumika Chawla, bombed at the box office and became trolling material for Balayya due to its illogical scenes. Whereas the director’s earlier film with Nagarjuna, titled ‘Bava Nachadu," too was not successful at the box office.

​Dharani - 'Bangaram’

Tamil director Dharani, who made his Tollywood debut with the 2006 action film 'Bangaram," starring Pawan Kalyan, Meera Chopra, Ashutosh Rana, and Mukesh Rishi in the key roles, is funded by star maker A.M. Ratnam, but the film was a disaster at the Tollywood box office, and the director didn’t make a film in Telugu again.

Cheran -'Jk En Nanbanin Valzhai’

Tamil director Cheran, who is a four-time National Film Award winner and six-time Filmfare award-winning filmmaker, made a bilingual film titled ‘JK Enum Nanbanin Vaazhkai’ with Sharwanand and Nithya Menen in the lead roles. Prakash Raj, Santhanam, and others played other supporting roles in the film that was released as a direct-to-home release that wasn’t successful in Tollywood.

SJ Suryah – ‘Nani’ and ‘Puli’

SJ Suryah, who works predominantly in Tamil cinema, made a Telugu film, 'Kushi," in 2000, which was very successful here. Later, he made two more films, one each with Mahesh Babu (‘Nani’) and Pawan Kalyan (‘Puli’). Both films were written off with very bad reviews for their poor storylines and execution.

​Prabhu Solomon - 'Aranya’


Kollywood director Prabhu Solomon, who primarily works in Tamil cinema, made his Telugu directing debut with a multi-lingual action-adventure film titled ‘Aranya/Kaadan’. The film was also dubbed into Hindi as ‘Haathi Mere Saathi." However, the film was released as a direct-to-video (or OTT) film, and it has received mixed to poor reviews.

​Kanmani - 'Arjuna’

Tamil director ‘Kanmani, who has made several Tamil films in the past, has yet to make a blockbuster film in Telugu, despite having made enough films here already. His recent film ‘Arjuna," starring Rajasekhar and Maryam Zakaria, has Vandemataram Srinivas giving music to it, but the film failed to grab the public's attention...!
