₹10 crore microfinance dispute escalates with dual FIRs; Mangli denies fraud claims

A `10 crore investment fraud allegation has spiraled into a high-stakes legal war between folk icon Mangli and advocate Singapogu Subbarao. With dual FIRs registered and claims involving death threats and manipulated videos, the case has moved from a financial dispute to a battle for reputation.




What happened

The case began with the advocate alleging that his clients were duped of nearly `9.5–10 crore through investment schemes linked to “Gokula Nandana Infra India Pvt Ltd,” with around 100–150 investors promised high returns. He named Mangli, her brother Shiva and others in the complaint, also alleging intimidation and threats when he attempted to recover the money. Based on the complaint, a case was registered at the Panjagutta Police Station. As the dispute intensified, Mangli denied the allegations and filed a counter complaint at the Narsingi Police Station, accusing the advocate of harassment and defamation, turning the matter into a two-sided legal battle.

• BNS Section 318 (Cheating): Allegations that Mangli and her brother Shiva used her stardom to lure middle-class investors into “Gokula Nandana Infra,” promising 3-5% monthly returns via film financing.
• BNS Section 351(2) (Criminal intimidation): Subbarao alleges he was threatened with a “staged road accident” when he demanded refunds for his clients.
• BNS Section 61 (Criminal conspiracy): Police are investigating a coordinated effort between the five accused to siphon funds.

Counter-allegations: The blackmail case

• BNS Section 351(3) (Extortion by threat): Mangli claims Subbarao used a “fake video” — reportedly showing her with large sums of cash — to demand money and threaten her career.
• BNS Section 79 (Insulting modesty): The singer alleges the advocate used abusive language and derogatory gestures intended to humiliate her during their interactions.
• BNS Section 356 (Defamation): Mangli’s team asserts the entire fraud narrative is a “deliberate misinformation campaign” to destroy her public image.

Fraud claims under scanner

The case: Advocate Singapogu Subbarao alleges a systemic investment fraud promising high returns (3–5% monthly) through film industry financing via Gokulanandana Infra India Pvt Ltd.

₹10 Cr: The official fraud amount currently being investigated under the Panjagutta Police FIR.

150+ investors: The approximate number of investors (mostly middle-class families) Subbarao claims were affected.

₹150-200 Cr: The total projected scam size alleged by Subbarao in his media briefings.

No link to case: Director Venu distances himself from row

Film director and producer Venu Udugula has distanced himself after advocate Subbarao alleged he was present during a settlement meeting. Clarifying his role as a mutual acquaintance, Venu maintained he has no business ties to the alleged fraud. “I’m deeply hurt to see my name linked to the Mangli case. I have no involvement in this issue. I only suggested a peaceful resolution as both parties are known to me,” he said, adding, “Even in the FIR, my name is not listed as an accused… The Panjagutta police also confirmed I am not related to this matter.”
