Samantha Ruth Prabhu's 'Shaakuntalam' falls short at the box office; collects Rs 9.15 crore

'Shaakuntalam,' the mythological drama featuring Samantha Ruth Prabhu in the lead role, recently hit the theatres, marking a significant shift in the actress's career. Known for her versatile performances in various genres, Samantha ventured into the mythological realm with this film. Directed by Gunasekhar, 'Shaakuntalam' released on April 14, 2023, and aimed to captivate audiences with its unique storytelling.

Anticipation surrounding the film was high, especially after Samantha's previous success in the film 'Yashoda.' However, 'Shaakuntalam' failed to meet the lofty expectations and received mixed reviews from viewers. Let's take a closer look at the financial performance of the movie. With a massive budget of Rs 60 crore, the producers faced the challenge of recovering their investment. They managed to recoup around half of the budget through streaming rights, alleviating some of the financial pressure.

In addition to Samantha's captivating performance, the film featured Dev Mohan as Dushyanta, along with an ensemble cast including Mohan Babu, Jisshu Sengupta, Madhoo, Gautami, Aditi Balan, and Ananya Nagalla in supporting roles. The technical crew included acclaimed music director Mani Sharma, cinematographer Sekhar V. Joseph, and editor Prawin Pudi.

Despite the underwhelming performance of 'Shaakuntalam' at the box office, Samantha's career continues to soar. Her next venture takes her to Bollywood, where she is set to make her debut in the highly-anticipated web series, Citadel. Directed by Raj & DK, the series features Varun Dhawan as the protagonist and has generated considerable buzz among fans.
