Nandamuri Balakrishna’s 'Akhanda 2:Thaandavam' crosses half a million mark in North America

Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Akhanda 2: Thaandavam has delivered a strong statement at the North American box office, crossing the half-a-million-dollar mark despite facing significant hurdles ahead of its release. The film’s performance overseas has emerged as a major morale booster for both the makers and fans, especially considering the uncertainty that surrounded its theatrical debut until the very last moment.

The Balakrishna starrer opened to an impressive response with a premiere collection of USD 452K across the US and Canada. The strong turnout for premiere shows underlined the actor’s loyal fan base in the circuit.The momentum continued on Friday, as Akhanda 2 added another USD 125K by early evening, pushing its total past the half a million milestone .




This achievement becomes even more noteworthy when viewed against the backdrop of the film’s troubled pre-release phase. Akhanda 2 was originally slated for a December 5 release, but its plans were abruptly disrupted following a Madras High Court order, which put the film’s release on hold. The unexpected legal setback created uncertainty across domestic and overseas distribution chains, impacting advance bookings and promotional activities.

At a critical juncture, Nandamuri Balakrishna himself stepped in to support the project. In a rare and highly commendable move, the actor reportedly adjusted at least Rs 20 crore from his remuneration to ease the financial pressure on the producers. This intervention proved to be a turning point, helping resolve key issues and ultimately clearing the path for the film’s theatrical release. The gesture has been widely appreciated within the industry, reinforcing Balakrishna’s reputation as not just a star but also a dependable pillar for his projects.

The film in India as well has been doing great numbers, the film in its premiere shows collected about Rs 8 crore and on its first day it minted Rs 22.53 crore , taking the overall total to Rs 30.53 crore.

The film has been written and directed by Boyapati Sreenu and features names like Samyuktha, Jagapathi Babu, Saswata Chatterjee , Pragya Jaiswal and Harshaali Malhotra of Bajrangi Bhaijaan fame.

The film is currently in competition with Ranveer Singh, Aditya Dhar, Arjun Rampal, Akshaye Khanna and R Madhavan’s Dhurandhar which had already crossed USD 5 million mark in 8 days. But it is still early days for Akanda 2 and only time will tell the tale.
