Ramani Kalyanam Movie Review: An emotional drama that never fully reaches it's potential

Rooted in themes of loss, resilience, and companionship, the film follows Sanjana (Deepshikha), a visually impaired singer who refuses to let tragedy define her life, and Raj (Surya), a former cricketer haunted by the dreams and future he lost. Their worlds collide through a series of chance encounters, gradually evolving into a relationship built on emotional healing and mutual understanding. However, as Raj’s worsening illness enters the narrative, the film begins to drift into familiar melodramatic territory. What works most effectively in the film is the emotional contrast between its two protagonists. Sanjana approaches life with acceptance and quiet strength, refusing to see her disability as something that limits her identity. Raj, in contrast, remains emotionally trapped in grief and frustration over losing both his parents and his promising cricket career. This emotional imbalance between hope and bitterness gives the first half of the film genuine warmth and emotional depth.Deepshikha delivers a sincere and grounded performance, bringing dignity and emotional maturity to Sanjana without reducing the character to mere sympathy. Surya, too, convincingly portrays Raj’s internal conflict and emotional vulnerability. Their chemistry works best in the quieter moments, where the film slows down and allows its characters to simply exist with each other. However, despite its promising emotional premise, the film struggles with inconsistent writing. Several scenes that aim to inspire end up feeling overly preachy, with dialogues occasionally spelling out emotions rather than allowing them to unfold naturally. Certain dramatic moments also stretch believability, weakening the realism the film initially builds. A few sequences, particularly those designed to heighten emotional impact, feel exaggerated and disconnected from the grounded tone established earlier.Visually and emotionally, the film carries the potential of a comforting feel-good drama about finding hope amid personal loss. Yet, as the story progresses, it increasingly leans on predictable emotional tropes and formulaic twists. While the performances remain earnest enough to hold attention, the narrative never fully rises above familiar storytelling patterns.Overall, the film offers a few heartfelt moments and sincere performances, but its uneven execution prevents it from becoming the emotionally impactful drama it aspires to be.
