Review:
Akhanda 2 picks up in a world where unrest is growing once again, fuelled by corruption, power struggles and an emerging threat that blends political ambition with mystical forces. As tensions rise, Akhanda — Balakrishna’s revered sage-warrior is drawn back into the battlefield to confront a new wave of chaos. The plot expands the scope of the first film, stretching beyond local conflict into a larger, national-level conspiracy. Akhanda’s return becomes central to restoring balance, with his spiritual strength and fierce persona positioned as humanity’s last defence against rising darkness.
Boyapati Sreenu brings Balakrishna’s iconic avatar back with unmistakable scale and intensity, and Akhanda 2 wastes no time in delivering big, explosive action moments. The film is designed to satisfy mass audiences who enjoy loud, stylised set pieces and a towering protagonist who commands the screen. Balakrishna steps into the role with complete conviction, offering flashes of the magnetic energy that defined the first film. There are a few standout moments where his presence alone elevates the scene.
However, despite this raw mass appeal, the emotional foundation of the original feels significantly diluted. The film’s ambition is certainly bigger — national stakes, spiritual forces, elaborate antagonists but the writing doesn’t always rise to meet that ambition. The narrative leans heavily on spectacle, often prioritising decibel levels and visual chaos over character depth and storytelling clarity. As a result, the drama feels stretched and uneven.
The supporting cast, including Aadhi Pinisetty, Samyuktha and Kabir Duhan Singh, is given limited room to make an impact. Their arcs remain thin, serving more as accessories to Akhanda’s journey rather than fully formed characters. Emotional subplots come and go without building lasting weight, and several scenes feel familiar, echoing beats from the first film without adding fresh layers. Thaman’s score tries to energise the narrative and succeeds in parts, but the overstretched action blocks and repetitive tonal shifts reduce the overall punch.
In the end, Akhanda 2 delivers scale, noise and a handful of impactful moments but struggles to recreate the gripping emotional core and narrative tightness that made Akhanda click for many viewers. It lands as a grand yet uneven sequel: ambitious in spirit, loud in execution and inconsistent in engagement.
Should you watch it?
Watch it only if you’re a Balakrishna loyalist who enjoys grand, mass action, and can overlook the uneven storytelling and repetitive formula.
