Movie Review: Abbayilu emi alochincha kunda ara ganta varaku silent ga kurchoni undagalugutharu. (Boys can sit around in silence without having anything on their mind). Kopam ayina prema ayina ammayila laga abbayilu eppudu chupincha leru. (Be it anger or love, boys can never express themselves the way girls can). Ammayilani purthi ga ardham chesukovadamu abbayilaku assalu sadhyamu kadu ani telisthene ammayilani premichavachchu. (A boy can only love a girl when he accepts that it’s impossible to understand your girl completely). “Love Failure” is full of such quirky proclamations about boys, girls, love and heartache. It’s a rom-com shot with the sensibility of a spoof.

Debutante director, Balaji Mohan has adapted his own critically acclaimed Tamil short film, “Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi”, into this feature film. Right from its unusual-yet-amusing characterization, the background score and the writing, the film is loaded with humor. As if that wasn’t enough, it is nicely sugar coated from inside out.

Arun (Siddharth) is the only son of his loving patents. He’s never had to struggle for anything in life and hopes that love will provide that challenge. His wish comes true in form of Parvathi (Amala Paul), the only daughter of her parents who are on the verge of a divorce. Arun and Amala meet on the first day of college and Parvathi snubs Siddharth’s friendly overture. The two eventually fall in love and in about a year’s time, they decide to go their own way. The why and what of the heart-ache are revealed in a set of non-linearly idiosyncratic flash backs.

Siddharth is in his element playing the love struck young man who is at his wits end, trying to make sense of the girl he loves. Amala Paul complements him quite well and the two work up some good chemistry on screen. She wears very little make up and looks every bit the girl next door, struggling with her own insecurities and her parents’ eminent divorce. Nirav Shah’s cinematography is simple yet realistic. Thaman’s background score is quirky and stays true to the mood of the film.

The film also packs in a message for heart broken couples in the end — there is nothing called a ‘made in heaven’ couple. People end up becoming made for each other and to succeed in love, you must fail in it first. Same old message perhaps, but told with some verve.

Disclaimer: It is chic alright, but lacks the typical Tollywood style whistle-worthy moments.
