Guvva Gorinka

Story: Sadanand (Satyadev) is a PhD student who is averse to loud noises and his neighbour Sireesha (Priya Lal) is a wannabe-musician who takes her craft seriously. How do such differing individuals fall in love without even meeting each other?

Review: When you read the title Guvva Gorinka, you expect a cutesy love story that reflects the chemistry between two beautiful souls. But director Mohan Babu does anything but that. The concept of falling in love without meeting each other is not new to Tollywood but the writing of this film is what lets it down.

Sadanand (Satyadev) is a PhD student who is averse to loud noises so his aim is to invent an automobile engine that doesn’t emit any. Sireesha (Priya Lal) is a musician who aims big in the music industry and convinces her father to let her move to Hyderabad to join a music course. All seems well till there are unnecessary scenes of Sireesha using her music to irritate Sadanand and when they both fight it out, you just know they’re going to fall in love soon. Priyadarshi and Rahul Ramakrishna try their best to entertain but they hardly manage to elicit a smile in this lifeless love story.

When predictably issues crop up between the titular Guvva and Gorinka, it’s hard not to sigh as even that drama feels outdated. What comes as a surprise however is Bithri Sathi’s spoof of Arjun Reddy. While his screen-time is less, it’s hard not to laugh at his antics. And it’s no spoiler to reveal that the film ends on a happy note because, of course, they manage to sort it all out. What’s funny is how through the years, filmmakers have gotten used to the trope of showing basic compatibility and communication issues in a relationship as something herculean.

Some might argue that Guvva Gorinka is a film that was supposed to hit screens four years ago, but this script is outdated even for 2017. Satyadev performs well, as always, but if only he picked better scripts. Priya Lal tries but fails to pour life into her character. Priyadarshi, Rahul Ramakrishna, Yadamraju, Prabhakar and other cast are good enough in their roles. Guvva Gorinka seems like a wasted opportunity that fails to make a mark.
