Story: An independent, free-spirit girl who likes to place bets finds herself naked in an abandoned building after a late-night party, receiving the shock of her life.

Review: Female-centric movies with engaging and progressive content are the need of the hour and have been getting their due off-late. Aame too manages to tick several boxes and join the list, thanks to various factors that work in its favour.

Kamini (Amala Paul) is an independent, bold, care-free girl who deals with the shock of finding herself naked in an abandoned building the day after a late-night party. Everything after turns her world topsy-turvy.

It is a delight to watch as Amala Paul manages to pull off a character who works for a TV channel and is unapologetically tomboyish and adventurous. Her mother (Sriranjani) is of course worried about her daring nature, but is confident that she’ll take care of herself. A sudden birthday party that one of her colleagues organise for her in their company’s old building goes wild and a series of intriguing episodes follow.

The way the intense film is made coupled with the actress’ convincing performance make way for ample edge-of-the-seat moments. Several contemporary issues are touched upon without affecting the pace of the engaging screenplay, until a flashback is revealed. The backstory for the main conflict is preachy and one wonders why films should so often talk of social issues that don’t gel well with the film. It not only drags the premise, but also puts a dent on the core, thrilling plot to an extent.

Nonetheless, Aame is a compelling watch, breaking a few stereotypes and offering an engaging experience.
