The couple's romance began in 1980 during the shooting of Thillu Mullu. Latha Rangachari, then a college student, met Rajinikanth for an interview for her college magazine. What started as a professional meeting quickly turned into something special.

During their conversation, they discovered shared interests and a connection to Bengaluru, where Rajini had worked as a bus conductor before entering films. By the end of the interview, Rajinikanth was smitten and asked if she would marry him.

Latha said she needed her parents' approval first. Rajinikanth enlisted the help of senior colleagues from the Tamil film industry to win over her family. His efforts paid off, and the couple married on February 26, 1981, at Tirupati Temple in Andhra Pradesh.
