The voice behind some of the popular numbers in Kollywood, including Kodayila, En Jeevan and Vaayaadi Pettha Pulla, has recently recorded Ekla Chalo Re for an indie feature, Welcome Back Gandhi. Penned by
Rabindranath Tagore, the song, Ekla Cholo Re, is a popular Bengali patriotic number.
A source says, “Mahatma Gandhi was deeply influenced by the powerful words of the song , which roughly translates to ‘If no one responds to your call, then go your own way alone’, and it is one of his favourite numbers.
The song has been featured in several films as well, and reimagined by composers like AR Rahman and Vishal-Shekhar. The one version sung by Amitabh Bachchan is very popular as well. Now, the song has been used in the English-Hindi film Welcome Back Gandhi, which is being produced by the team behind Kamaraj, which won ‘Special Film of the Year Award’ from the government of Tamil Nadu. The makers felt that
Vaikom Vijayalakshmi’s voice would be a fitting tribute to Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary. The background scenes for the song have already been picturised in various parts of India that had been visited by Gandhiji.”
The song was released by V Kalyanam, the personal secretary of Gandhi, recently.
