The team of Kolai, starring Vijay Antony in the lead, released the first single from the film last evening. The song, Neerkumizho, has been rendered by Sid Sriram and will appear at a crucial junction in the story. Composer Girishh Gopalakrishnan says recording this song has been an absolute pleasure.

“We have actually got Sid back in the zone where he was 12 years ago. You can hear Sid who used to perform at jazz club… much before Adiye happened. I remember, with Rahman sir, he used to do a lot of blues and bring out the whole classical vibe. Over the years, the way he sings changed. But with this song, he got the right pull. When the lyrics (by Karthik Netha) came, we knew Sid was perfect for it,” begins Girishh.

The song is in the R&B space, and was recorded in Prague. “Sid sang the number at the studio in Chennai, but we did the orchestral, brass band and jazz sections in Prague,” informs the composer, adding, “Sid was really excited when he heard the track. He has sung two songs for me before, but they were in his comfort zone. When he heard this track, he got really nostalgic. He had so much energy and was improvising on the spot. He has never done this the last two times he recorded with me — but for this one, he asked me if he could have the track because he wanted to keep hearing it before going to sleep.”

The film has five songs in all, and what’s interesting is that they are all in the spatial audio format. “The process of recording is the same, but how we use various aspects of the musical elements is different in this format. Generally, you record the orchestra from the gallery, which may not make any difference in the stereo spectrum. But in this format, it makes a huge difference. We — director Balaji Kumar, producer Kamal Bohra and I — were inspired by Billie Eilish’s No Time To Die because it was in that same zone,” he says. He will now be recording the Telugu version of the song with Sid again this week.
