Recreating the magic of music through covers
Composer R Kumar Narayanan of Saintunes recently did a cover song that included two popular numbers of two different eras. He took the melodious Palinginaal Oru Maaligai from Vallavan Oruvan originally composed by Vedha and another one, July Maadham from Puthiya Mugam, which was composed by AR Rahman.
Ask him why he chose these two songs and he says, I initially wanted to do an AR Rahman cover.

But then I had an idea about combining two songs for this. I chose composer Vedha sir because he wasnt as celebrated as other music directors. I love both these songs, and the output came out well, says Kumar, adding, We have taken the core of the original songs and re-arranged the music to suit to the tastes of the present generation. The idea behind the cover was to fuse a really old evergreen song along with a hit number. For Palinginaal Oru Maaligai, we have upped the tempo and for July Maadham, we reduced the tempo.
The song has been rendered by Lakshmi Pradeep of Super Singer fame, KG Sreenivasan handled the line production, keys played by Anish Mohan, violins played by Jithin Roshan and sax played by Basanth Muralikrishnan.
I wanted to give an opportunity to new singers. I follow the music reality show and have seen Lakshmi perform. I thought her voice suits best for the song. Ananth Vaidhyanathan, a Carnatic musician, voice trainer and expert, also helped us execute this song, he says.
