I felt very happy with the reception,’ shares playback singer Deepak Blue, who has lent his voice for Pushpa Pushpa, the title track of Pushpa 2: The Rule. In a chat with us, he opens up about recording for the song, how he didn't even know that Aalaporaan Thamizhan was part of Mersal when he sang it, and the reason behind adding Blue to his name...

'RECORDING PUSHPA PUSHPA TOOK ALMOST THREE TO FOUR HOURS'This song happened at the very last minute, like just three days before it came out. I've been working with Devi Sri Prasad (DSP) for quite a few years. I had gone to his studio to sing a Telugu song for another project. But this song was also getting ready, and he felt my voice would suit it, and wanted me to give it a try. Devi sir had originally sung the portion that I've now sung. Once the song was released, I felt very happy as I've delivered a big hit in Telugu after a small gap. When you listen to the song, it sounds straightforward, but the recording took almost three to four hours because DSP was very particular about the tone. His recordings are a great experience because he is very clear about what he wants. He also gives a lot of importance to the lyrics and how they sound.

‘WHEN I SANG FOR IT, I DIDN'T THINK KANTARA WOULD BECOME SO HUGE’I’d sung the Tamil version of the song Singara Siriye from Kantara. I had no idea that the film would become such a huge project. I had also sung for KGF 2. But at least for that film, I knew everyone was looking forward to the sequel of KGF. For us, singers, we need to give a good output, and the composer needs to be happy. After that, we don't know what happens to that song. Actually, nobody knows what happens to that song. There are times when we really think the song is going to be amazing when it releases. But then, it may not turn out like that and some other song in the project may become a big hit. Nobody can predict the success of a song or even a project.

ON WHY HE CHANGED HIS NAME TO DEEPAK BLUE...I have been credited as Deepak in almost 150 songs. Till 2019, there was no other Deepak on the circuit. So, I didn't really think of a second name. But in 2019, I learnt that there was a singer in Bhojpuri who was also named Deepak. When I searched for my songs, his songs used to come up in the search results. So, in 2019, I added Blue to my name, because I thought it would be catchier. Also, blue is a very nice colour, and I wear a lot of blue as I believe that colour makes you feel cool and settes you down a bit. All my social handles were already Deep Blue, because, growing up, I'd read about the supercomputer Deep Blue, following the much-publicised chess game between Garry Kasparov and this computer. It actually defeated the world champion! So, I thought Deep Blue sounded so cool.

On singing Aalaporaan Thamizhan from Mersal...When I sang Aalaporaan Thamizhan, for a very long time, I didn't know what the project was. From the lyrics, I guessed that it could be a big project. And you feel blessed to sing any song for Rahman sir. So, I didn't really think about what the project was. But almost six months later, I was at my friend's birthday party, and I got a call asking for my credit. At that time, I was going as Deepak.
