Music Review: Puppy

The soundtrack of

Puppy

comprises quite a star-studded line-up. The Dharan Kumar jukebox has names like Yuvan Shankar Raja, Shashaa Tirupati, Anirudh Ravichander, Gautham Vasudev Menon and RJ Balaji associated with its spirited songs.

The album starts with Anji Manikku, with Yuvan Shankar Raja’s inimitable voice. RJ Vijay’s lyrics is conversational, and traces the emerging love between the protagonists. The song also has vocals by Shashaa Tirupati, which is a breath of fresh air. Yet another romantic number comes in Uyirae Vaa, a pleasant ballad sung by Gautham Menon, Alisha Thomas and Dharan. The drowning guitar strings in the song elevate the melody. There are two perky songs in the album, which are also the most interesting numbers in the soundtrack. Superstar, sung by Anirudh, lives up to its name. Written by RJ Vijay, the song masquerades as a youth anthem, with its lively beats.

Soththumoottai, the Food Song, is an ode to Chennai’s charming food culture. From rose milk and nei pongal to biryani and kothu parotta, the song crooned by RJ Balaji, lists the city’s most iconic dishesh. The gastronomical delight ends with a typical RJ Balaji touch. The album finishes off with En Kai Enakku, which is almost forgettable with its run-of-the-mill lyrics. That apart, the album is appealing for its mixed bag of voices.
