Kaalidas

Composer: Vishal Chandrashekhar
Music Review: Vishal Chandrashekhar’s soundtrack for Bharath and Suresh Menon-starrer Kaalidas is a lovely assortment of genre-bending tunes. The album begins with Mazhai, a Carnatic fusion number, rendered by Sudha Ragunathan in her characteristic timbre. Notes of veena beautifully accompany the song’s EDM beats. Thamarai’s lyrics becomes one with the song’s theme.

Another rain themed song comes in Santiago Saral, a peppy number with touches of jazz. The beautiful Andrea Jeremiah solo is a modern fusion, which is amplified by plenty of instrumental interludes. Next comes Meraki Nenjam, a sombre number that plays out nicely in Sharanya Gopinath’s husky voice. The crisp song, which ends in a powerful crescendo is another fast-paced female solo.

The last two songs in the album are by Abhay Jodhpurkar. In Kaakkai Chiraginile Nandalala and Maalai Pozhudhin, Abhay shows off his Carnatic vocal range, while seamlessly complementing the soothing background music.
