Album: Gypsy
Composer: Santhosh Narayanan Music Review: The album of Jiiva’s Gypsy, directed by Raju Murugan, brims with a burst of originality. Composer Santhosh Narayanan injects his characteristic charm into the soundtrack. The album starts with Very Very Bad, sung by Pradeep Kumar, a tongue-in-cheek satire piece, which has a touch of jazz. The song delivers a few social punchlines, with brilliant acoustics.
Kaathellam, by Pradeep Kumar, is a breezy melody, which is aided by Yagabharathi’s poignant words. Desaandhiri is another song, which packs quite a punch with the right messages. Rendered by Siddharth, the song is a strong commentary on the society.
This is followed by the powerful Venpura sung by Carnatic exponent TM Krishna and Santosh Narayanan. The six- minute song paints a picture of an ideal world, with a crisp interludes featuring lines from Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have A Dream’ speech.
Manamengum Maaya Oonjal is sweet-sounding ballad by Dhee, Haricharan and Ananthu that has the right fusion of Carnatic notes. The album’s highlight, though is Theevira Vyaadhi, written and performed by Tamil rapper Arivu. The song’s feisty lyrics is complemented by its solid beats.
