’s sports film Champion is very much par for the course. It has all the elements that the songs in a sports drama would demand – songs that are fast and furious, as well as sensual and dreamy. The fast-paced inspirational song – most probably a background score for a down-in-the-dumps team to pick up the pace – in this case, is Veerane Vaa. Quite hummable, Arrol Corelli, who’s done the music for the whole film, has kept it punchy and even, with no jarring notes.

Arrol, along with Nivas, has also sung this piece. Manathin Saalayil reminds you of school-girlie feelings and teen romance, Viveka’s lyrics and Arrol’s voice keep the song an earthy touch. Vaa maganey, the next song in this album, sung by Haricharan, is quite folksy. The lyrics are by Mohan Raja, and the song is about urging a dreamer to achieve his or her dreams. Aandavan Thoorigayil, sung by Karthik Kumar, written by Viveka, is very reminiscent of Saanjh Dhale (from the Bollywood movie, Utsav). The song is soft and sensuous, and melodious; the track stays with you, making you want to listen to it again and again.

The last song of the album, Enga Pullinga Ellam Bayangaram penned and sung by Vishwa and Gaana Stephen is faster, rappier take on another viral gaana number that made the word ‘pullingo’ a very famous and ‘punny’ Chennai word. Champion’s songs, overall, seem to be an attempt by the musicians involved to consciously tone down the raucous sound that’s being called songs these days in

Kollywood

. While all the songs are good, Aandavan Thoorigayil will be hard to forget for a while.
