Soolamangalam Jayalakshmi (85), the elder of the
Soolamangalam Sisters
died in Chennai on Thursday due to age-related illness. A popular Carnatic singer, she along with her younger sister Rajalakshmi, is known for their soulful rendering of the Kandha Sashti
Kavacham.
Popularly known as Soolamangalam Sisters, they have sung several devotional songs including the
Kandha Guru Kavacham
.
While both of them had sung in Tamil films, Rajalakshmi who passed away in 1992 had an illustrious career as a playback singer too.
Soolamangalam Sisters have won many awards and honours including Muruga Ganamritha, Kuyil Isai Thilakam, Isaiarasi and Nadhakanal. They received the Tamil Nadu Government's prestigious Kalaimamani Award in 1992. It’s reported that as per her last wish, Jayalakshmi’s body will be donated to the medical college for research purpose.
