After getting noticed for the opening song, Boys Are Back in Chennai 600028: II Innings, lyricist
Karunakaran is now writing songs in a handful of films. His new release is the romantic song, Siru Siru Siru Manasu, from the Santhanam-starrer Sakka Podu Podu Raja, which has music by Simbu. “I have already worked with Simbu in his directorial debut Vallavan, for the song Kadhal Vandhale.
He was the one who introduced me. So, I feel special to have written for his debut as a composer,” begins Karunakaran, who likens the experience of writing for Simbu to working with a brother, a friend and a teacher.
“He is straight forward. Many composers will hesitate when asking the lyricist to change a line, but like a teacher, he will say it point-blank if he does not like a line and compel you to change it. If he likes a line, he will shower praise instantly like a friend, and like a brother, he will be supportive and encourage you to take time to come up with a good line,” he elaborates.
He is writing a youthful romantic number for
Venkat Prabhu’s Party. “This is the first time I’m working with
Premgi Amaren, and it was fun,” he says.
There is also Ram’s Peranbu, which he cherishes quite a bit. “I got the chance through Yuvan. The late Na Muthukumar has written the lyrics for all of Ram’s films till now, and this is the first film of Ram which will not have his lines. So, I’m moved by his gesture of roping me in to write two songs. It’s a song that shows the feelings of three people — a girl, a dad and a lover. The other is a philosophical song,” he reveals.
The lyricist has also written a kuthu song for Bhaskar Oru Rascal, which has music by Amresh. “This is my hat-trick film with him, as I’d written for his Pottu and Garjanai, starring Trisha, as well,” he lists out.
And that’s not all. For the first time, he informs, he has written the dialogues for a film Baba Bhaskar’s Kuppathu Raja, which has GV Prakash Kumar in the lead.
