KT’s new single

Vaan Thirakkindra Pozhudhil

has fond memories attached to it, the singer tells us. The romantic ballad was the first song that her musician husband Karthik KT composed for her. Launched by Gautham Vasudev Menon, the song has clocked in many views since its release a few weeks ago.

The singer, who resides in Chicago, is elated with the response. “I recorded the song a couple of years ago with my husband, who is a passionate keyboardist. When I heard him play the tune, I just loved it,” she recalls. While the duo now has a home studio to make

, Vaan Thirakkindra Pozhudhil was recorded without any extravagance, from their humble clothes closet, doubling as a recording studio, the Theera Ulaa singer recalls with a laugh. “We tried to make the best out of the situation at the time. I do not sing from closets anymore,” the singer smiles.

Directed by Suriya Narayanan, the music video of the song is lensed by SR Kathir, in an iPhone. “When I played this song to Suriya, he loved the melody. He suggested that we shoot the song in an iPhone, as I had limited budget and time. The whole song was shot within four hours. To be launched by GVM himself was a wonderful feeling,” Darshana adds.

The musician, who has collaborated with

AR Rahman

for many songs including Theera Ulaa, Maduraikku Pogathadi, Kaara Aatakaara and Muafi Mushkil, says that it was a blessing to have sung so many earworms in his composition. “Apart from music, one gets really inspired by AR Rahman sir to constantly learn, relearn and rewire oneself. This quality in him has deeply inspired me. I apply this as much as possible when it comes to music,” she says.

Darshana has been using these past few months during the pandemic to brush up on her composing skills. “At the start of all this, I honestly thought this was going to be a gloomy, quiet year. However, I feel there have been so many artistes doing numerous creative collaborations in terms of dance and music,” she says.

The pandemic has also reignited a significant debate. How plausible is it for musicians to play free music on the internet? Payment issues in the music industry have existed well before the lockdown, observes Darshana. “Even though there are options to charge people for online concerts, it’s going to take a while to have people actually pay, due to the overflowing of free content on social media platforms. I hope people support independent artists, share their work and acknowledge them as much as possible,” adds Darshana, who is currently working on a few independent projects. “As for the future, I have a few film songs lined up as well,” she signs off.
