SIIMA 2016 nominations: Best Playback Singer

Anirudh (Thangamey / Naanum Rowdy Dhaan)

One of the first songs to be released from the album, Thangamey has universal appeal. Sung by the composer Anirudh himself, this is a breezy number, the lyrics are penned by Vignesh Sivan. Anirudh’s rendition of the song makes it not only peppy and hummable, but his voice reverberates with energy, making this an immensely popular track.

SIIMA 2016 nominations: Best Playback Singer

Karthik (Aye Sinamika / Ok Kanmani)

Aye Sinamika is a very laid-back song, a melody crooned by singer Karthik, who does nothing but uplift the song with his magical voice. Indeed, Karthik has proved time and again that his versatile voice is perfect for almost any song, and this one is no different. The mild guitar strums, piano touches and timely bass work perfectly complement the lyrics, making this an unforgettable number.

SIIMA 2016 nominations: Best Playback Singer

Benny Dayal (Unakenna Venum Sollu / Yenna Arindhaal)

It is easy to stereotype Benny Dayal as someone who sings only koothu songs and peppy numbers, but he rendered the beautiful melody – Unakenna Venum Sollu in Yennai Arindhaal, with just as much ease. Backed by very strong chords, mild arrangements and evenly paced rhythms, Benny’s voice adds just that special touch that the song needs.

SIIMA 2016 nominations: Best Playback Singer

GV Prakash (Anbe Anbe / Darling)

Anbe Anbe is both composed and rendered by music director GV Prakash himself. A typical GV track, the song has the feel of a rock song, with distorted guitars and thundering acoustics being the main highlight of the song.

SIIMA 2016 nominations: Best Playback Singer

Sid Sriram (Ennodu Nee Irundhaal / I )

Hailed as yet-another-Rahman discovery, Sid Sriram proved his worth with Adiye from Kadal, and once again with Ennodu Nee Irundhaal in I. His unique voice adds just the right amount of angst that the song wishes to convey, and strikes a chord with the audience. This may not be a song just for casual listening, as the raising octaves in the tune make it offbeat. But it surely is a song that grows on you and Sriram’s textured voice is pure gold.
