6 reasons ‘Visaranai’ is a perfect choice for the Oscars

Very authentic

Yesterday was a really proud moment for Tamil cinema as director Vetrimaaran’s ‘Visaranai’ was selected to represent India at the 89th Academy Awards. It is the first time in 16 years that a Tamil film has been chosen for this honour, the last being Kamal Haasan’s ‘Hey Ram’ in 2000. This brutal and super gritty movie on corruption in the police department was an eye-opener for the public. So, on this proud occasion, here are 5 reasons why ‘Visaranai’ is the perfect choice for the Oscars.

Very authentic

The best and perhaps the scariest part about ‘Visaranai’ is the sense of realism that pervades the entire film. From the way the cast look and dress, to the police speaking Telugu at the right places, to way the system works and how the corrupt cops frame a crime scene, it is all spot on. The fear of Dinesh Ravi and his friends as they are asked to accept the crimes they did not commit was too relatable.

Brilliant story

Brilliant story

Often, a movie either ends up having a very simple and predictable story or becomes something of a mess in a bid to make the plot more interesting. Obviously, ‘Visaranai’ does not suffer from these flaws. The tale is convoluted to just the right degree to mess with our heads and yet simple enough to keep us engaged. The way Vetrimaaran takes the story from police brutality and injustice right up to the corrupt nature of the Indian judiciary system without being preachy deserves a standing ovation.

Perfect cast

Perfect cast

From the main three leads to each and every small character, not one actor felt out of place. Dinesh Ravi, Aadukalam Murugadoss and Silambarasan Rathnasamy are too good as they play helpless guys who are caught in the jaws of an evil system. Be it Dinesh’s resilience in the face of adversity or Rathnasamy’s child like fear as he realizes they are about to be killed, their performances became etched in our minds. Samuthirakani is of course brilliant as Muthuvel, an upstanding cop who is coerced into the twisted ways of his superiors. ‘Visaranai’ is such a successful film today all thanks to this amazing cast.

Unanimous praise from film fraternity

Unanimous praise from film fraternity

Ever since the movie released in February, every celebrity and critic has not stopped praising this gritty crime thriller. Even Kollywood big shots like Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth were in awe of the film. In fact, the Superstar had claimed that he hasn’t seen a movie like this in a very long time. Also, generally a film which goes for Oscars faces some opposition. However, with ‘Visaranai’, everyone seems to be on the same page. Such a unanimous support for a film is extremely rare.

Extreme Impact

Extreme Impact

‘Visaranai’ is hard hitting in every sense of the word. The director doesn’t look to comfort the audience or promise them happy endings. The aim of the movie is to make the audience uncomfortable from the word go and disturb them enough to question the system. Mr Chandrakumar, who wrote the original novel ‘Lock Up’, claims that the movie was made to raise awareness on Human Rights violation and it succeeds in fulfilling its intentions. It showcases that such incidents do happen in real life and the poor people are the ones who suffer. ‘Visaranai’ is a wakeup call for the general public to raise their voices against the blatant human rights violation that is still so common.

Accolades

Accolades

Usually, a film can be adjudged Oscar worthy by how well it is received at the National Awards and ‘Visaranai’ ruled the 63rd National Awards. It won three awards - for best feature film in Tamil, for best supporting actor and best editing. One National Award is amazing in itself, but when a movie bags three then you know that it is something special. Ever since this hattrick, ‘Visaranai’ has held the attention of the critics and it’s no surprise that it made to the Oscars.
