Despite an influx of heroines from other industries into K-town, it looks like theres no one to claim the top spot...Tamil cinema is undergoing a metamorphosis. Top heroines who ruled the marquee have vanished, and the new ones just cannot sparkle! Admits a leading producer, Yes, there is a vacuum, with
Nayanthara not doing any new films,
Asin concentrating on her Bollywood career and
Trisha not signing anything new after Mankatha.
The new breed of girls lack charisma and star power.
A leading dress designer in Kollywood says, Jo (Jyothika) and Sim (
Simran) handed over the crown to Trash (Trisha), Asin and Nayan. The succession was smooth and the three juggled the big films between them during the last five years. They had glam, poise and star charisma, along with oodles of luck. However, the new stars simply do not have the style and grooming to get into their shoes.
A top hero, who is doing a film with a young new heroine who made a sensational debut in an offbeat film, says, The trouble is that these young girls just do not have proper guidance and have the wrong set of advisors and managers. Initially, I was kicked about doing the film with this girl, but she went and signed a film with a senior hero and plays the role of his wife in the film and mother to a five-year-old girl! And, this film is releasing before my film in which she plays a teenage girl and my love interest!
Says a frustrated director, My current heroine delivered a superhit in 2010, but at the end of the year, did a one-scene appearance in a multi-starrer where a big hero rejects her! The film bombed and she herself is today in the wilderness due to her wrong move.
Producer
Mani Sharma feels that the new breed of heroines is not up to the mark. Their choice of roles is bad and they often end up doing downmarket films, he says, Today, big heroes are going for multiple heroines in their films to make up for the deficiency.
Adds Tamil cinemas top financier, The cost of production has spiralled due to the current trend of bringing heroines from Bollywood. Earlier, no heroine, including Nayanthara and Asin, was paid more than Rs 50 lakhs for a Tamil film. Now, Bollywood actresses are invading Kollywood, with many of them (Sonakshi Sinha, Prachi Desai and Deepika Padukone, for instance) being paid anywhere between 1.5 to 2 crore.
