When legends meet

...filmgoers are assured of a treat. Director Tamira talks to TOI about one such treat
When legends meet
It is a casting coup of sorts for debutant writer and director Tamira. Hes brought together the 79-year-old doyen among directors in Tamil cinema K Balachander and 67-year-old Bharathiraja, who changed filmmaking in Tamil films.
The two will be featured together in lead roles in Rettai Suzhi, a film that is being produced by the showman of Kollywood, Shankar.

It is not for the first time that the two veteran directors are donning the grease paint. In the early 80s, Bharathiraja acted in his Kalukkul Eeram as the hero. Three years back, he played the role of the villain in Mani Ratnams Ayudha Ezhuthu. KB, on the other hand, has acted in his own productions like Kalki, Poi and many of his TV serials. Both are directors who are known to act out a scene for the benefit of their actors before a scene is shot.
Tamira was a former associate and dialogue writer of KB and had helped him with the script of Poi. He has also worked closely with KB for some television serials. He says, Bharathiraja and KB sir are not only outstanding directors but also fine performers in their own right. So, the presence of these two actors in Rettai Suzhi is going to be a treat for the audiences. Tamira adds that initially, both the actors did not want to do the film and they had to be persuaded.
Two new youngsters play the romantic lead, with children as supporting cast. Also, there is Jayachitra making a comeback as KBs wife in the film. Says Tamira, Balachander sir had suggested Jayachitra for the role of his wife in the film. Remember Jayachitras memorable roles in KBs films like Sollathan Ninaikirein and Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal? Rettai Suzhi is going to be yet another major film in her career. The story of the film, set in a village near Tirunelveli, is about Sinagara Velan (played by Bharathiraja), a die-hard communist leader and a chronic bachelor, and his relationship with his best friend, Ramaswamy, an egoistic man who refuses to change.

The Kollywood grapevine has it that the film is about the friendship between the late Chief Ministers Annadurai and Kamaraj. However, director Tamira denies it and says, The film is about the ups and downs in a relationship between two veterans who are ideologically different in their approach towards life and childish by nature, which in turn leads to the twists and turns in not only their lives but also the lives of the people around them. To add to their problems, Singara Velans niece falls in love with Ramasamys son complicating matters further.
One of the highlights of the film is going to be Karthik Rajas music. He is supposed to have composed soul-stirring music for the film. One of the songs which will be in the background is going to be recorded shortly with Kamal Haasan singing the number.
As Tamira concludes, Rettai Suzhi is going to be a different type of film with a subtle message packaged in an entertaining manner. It will showcasethe hidden acting talents of KB and Bharathiraja. It will be a treat to watch them slug it out on screen.
