When AR Rahman stood by wife Saira Banu after Kasturi Shankar trolled her for not being fluent in Tamil

AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have stirred the internet and the hearts of their fans by announcing their decision to part ways after 29 years of marriage. Saira confirmed the separation through a statement issued by her lawyer, Vandana Shah.

In 2023, actress Kasturi Shankar, who is currently under criticism for her comments against the Telugu community, had trolled Saira Banu for her lack of fluency in Tamil. Kasturi shared a short clip from the Vikatan Awards on Twitter, questioning AR Rahman about Saira’s language skills. She wrote, “What? AR Rahman’s wife does not speak Tamil? What is their mother tongue? What do they talk about at home? #arrahman.”

The tweet sparked backlash from fans, who criticized Kasturi for targeting the legendary musician and his wife online. AR Rahman wasted no time in responding. He posted a note on Twitter addressing the actress, writing, “Kadhalukku Mariyadhai” in Tamil, which translates to “Respect for Love.”



Now, a year after this incident, AR Rahman and Saira Banu have decided to end their 29-year marriage. A statement released by Saira’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, reads, “After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband, Mr. AR Rahman. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship.” The couple share three children: daughters Khatija and Raheema, and a son, AR Ameen.
