SP Shakthivel, who previously helmed Urumeen and Payanigal Gavanikkavum, is coming up with his third film — an action thriller, titled Alangu. Set along the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border, Shakthivel tells us that the film is a ‘man versus dog story.’ “In society, there are some who like dogs and others who don’t. The film will showcase the rift between these two communities,” shares the director when we ask him about the film’s plot.

“A tribal group from Tamil Nadu goes to Kerala for work. They have a rift with a political gang in Kerala, which turns into a big issue,” he adds.

He further tells us that there are important female characters in this film, but there won’t be any romantic angle. Alangu will have actors from both Tamil and Malayalam, including Selfie actor Gunanidhi, who plays the lead role of a young tribal man, Kaali Venkat, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sarath Appani, and Sreerekha.

Shakthivel adds that the film’s characters from Tamil Nadu speak in Tamil while those from Kerala will speak in Malayalam and that the film will have subtitles for both. The director also explores getting the dogs to act in the film. “Making them act was very tough. We adopted and trained stray dogs for the film and got a lot of live shots,” he concludes.

‘After COVID, there are no language barriers in cinema’Shakthivel is all about multilingual casting and language barriers being broken in cinema. “If you take Vettaiyan, Fahadh Faasil and Manju Warrier have acted in that film. Today’s cinema has changed. After COVID, there are no language barriers in cinema. Even big heroes are acting across languages, which used to rarely happen earlier, but is frequently happening now. It is a welcome change,” opines the filmmaker.
