At a recent press meet of the film
Saayam
, starring
Vijay Vishwa
(formerly
Abi Saravanan), director
SA Chandrasekar
revealed that he had given Tamil as the
caste
of his son and actor
Ilayathalapathy Vijay, when he enrolled him in school.
Speaking at the event,
SAC
said, "The film talks about how caste gets propagated among school students. I like filmmakers who make films that are useful for the society. What have we done practically to get rid of caste? When I had to enrol my son
Vijay in school, I mentioned his religion and caste as Tamil. They refused to accept the application form initially. I threatened them saying that I would hold a protest that would lead to the school shutting down. Only then they relented and accepted. Since then, in all of Vijay's certificates, wherever caste is mentioned, you will find that it is mentioned as Tamil. It is we who are giving importance to caste. If we put our minds to it, like what I did, we can all avoid mentioning caste when admitting our children in schools. This way, we can abolish caste in the next 20 years."
He then added, "Abi Saravanan, who has acted in my film, has now changed his changed his name to Vijay Vishwa. There is a vibration that is created when you utter the word Vijay. Bollywood screenwriter duo Salim-Javed used to name their protagonists Vijay, especially in the films that
Amitabh Bachchan acted in. Similarly, I, too, used Vijay as the name of the protagonist in my films. This is why I named my son Vijay. Vijay means victory. Victory should attach itself to Vijay Vishwa."
