Vijay to Vikram, times when Kollywood biggies clashed at the box office!

Kollywood is one of the busiest entertainment industries in India, and a handful of films release every week. While some manage to awe the audience and get good box office numbers, others fail to get into the league. There are also times when movies released on the same date have worked well and are declared profitable ventures. Let’s take a look at times when movies of the biggest stars from Tamil clashed at the box office, and one stole the other’s thunder!

'Sachein' and 'Chandramukhi'

Vijay's 'Sachein' was released along with Rajinikanth's 'Chandramukhi' and Kamal Haasan's 'Mumbai Express' on the occasion of the 2005 Tamil New Year. Rajinikanth's 'Chandramukhi' turned out as the biggest hit and the film had a successful theatrical run of over 300 days. Vijay's 'Sachein', which was released along Rajinikanth starrer, also turned out to be a super hit, but the massive buzz of 'Chandramukhi' overshadowed Sachein.

Vijay and Silambarasan clashed at the 2012 box office with 'Thuppakki' and 'Poda Podi' respectively. Vijay starrer turned out as the best among the two, and the film move on to convert as a box office blockbuster by grossing over Rs 100 crores. Vignesh Shivan's directorial 'Poda Podi' starring Silambarasan was an enjoyable film, however, the film's success was outranked by Vijay's 'Thuppakki'.

'Meeyadha Maan' and 'Mersal'

Vaibhav starrer 'Meeyadha Maan', which was directed by debutant Rathna Kumar, clashed with Vijay's 'Mersal', which was directed by Atlee, on 2017 Diwali. The film with zero expectations faced the film with higher expectations, and both managed to earn good ratings. But the wide release of Vijay's 'Mersal' dominated 'Meeyadha Maan' and the former went on to gross over Rs 200 crores.

'Thamizh Padam 2.O' and 'Kadaikutty Singam'

Shiva starrer 'Thamizh Padam 2.O' and Karthi starrer 'Kadaikutty Singam' were released on the same date in July 2018. Even though both films received great reviews, Karthi's family drama was widely chosen by the audience, and the film earned over Rs 100 crores. 'Thamizh Padam 2.O' was also a superhit as the film grossed more than its budget.

'Naane Varuvean' and 'Ponniyin Selvan 1'

Dhanush's 'Naane Varuvean' faced the magnum opus 'Ponniyin Selvan 1', which is directed by Mani Ratnam, at the box office a few days back. Dhanush starrer was released a day ahead of the historical film and the film gained good numbers at the box office with good reviews. But from the second day, 'Ponniyin Selvan 1' started to conquer the box office as the film broke records and the mega-blockbuster success of Mani Ratnam's directorial overpowered Selvaraghavan's directorial.
