In a recent interview, notable producer Ramesh revealed that as the film didn't go as well as expected, 'Thalaivaa' wasn't profitable for the producers. After knowing the same, Vijay came forward and returned Rs 6 crore from his salary to the producer. Vijay received a salary of Rs 12 crore for 'Thalaivaa' and he returned half of his salary as he didn't want the producer to suffer. So, Ramesh praised Vijay for his good heart, and claimed that no one has suffered because of Vijay.

Directed by AL Vijay, 'Thalaivaa' features Vijay and Amala Paul in the lead roles, and the film is about a cool youngster turning into a revolutionary leader. The film's title and the tagline 'Time To Lead' turned controversial as the ruling part of that time in Tamil Nadu banned the film's release in the state. 'Thalaivaa' had a delayed start in Tamil Nadu, and the film secured a decent number at the box office.
