In a significant development, Rajkamal Films International has informed the Karnataka High Court that the release of the much-anticipated film 'Thug Life' will be postponed in the state by a week. This decision comes amidst growing tension and controversy over actor Kamal Haasan’s remarks during the film's audio launch, where he stated that Kannada originated from Tamil. The comment triggered backlash from the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), which demanded a public apology from the actor, warning that the film would otherwise not be allowed to screen in the state.
KFCC demands apology
The issue reached the Karnataka High Court, where the film production house filed a petition seeking intervention. During the hearing, the bench, led by Justice Nagaprasanna, questioned Kamal Haasan’s reluctance to apologise, asking rhetorically, “What ego is there in offering an apology?” The court clarified that it was not demanding an apology, but acknowledged that the request came from the KFCC. As per News 7, in response, Rajkamal Films sought a week’s time to address the concerns raised, and decided to postpone the film's release in Karnataka.

The controversy surrounding Kamal Haasan’s comment has reignited sensitivities between linguistic and cultural identities of Tamil and Kannada speakers. Though Kamal Haasan stated that his intent was genuine and not to undermine Kannada’s rich legacy, the KFCC remained firm, stating that no release would be permitted unless an apology was issued. The matter has taken on both cultural and legal dimensions, complicating the release plans of the film in Karnataka.
Cultural sentiments at play
As a temporary resolution, Rajkamal Films has decided to defer the release of 'Thug Life' in Karnataka by one week. This pause is expected to give all stakeholders time to navigate the controversy and potentially arrive at a peaceful understanding, ahead of what is otherwise a highly awaited cinematic release.
