The
Madras High Court has postponed the
income tax case filed by actor
Vijay and adjourned the next hearing to October 10. The case filed by Vijay seeking to quash the order imposing a fine of Rs. 1.50 crore for concealing income was heard again before Judge C. Saravanan.
According to The Hindu Tamil,
Thalapathy Vijay's side argued that the legal deadline for imposing the penalty was June 30, 2019. But the
Income Tax Department had issued a belated order on June 30, 2022. Therefore, the order was invalid and should be quashed. In response, the Income Tax Department emphasized, "The fine has been imposed in accordance with the law; there is no error in the order."
Case linked to 2016–17 returns
This case pertains to the financial year 2016-17. Thalapathy Vijay had declared an income of Rs 35.42 crore in his income tax return for that year. However, during a raid in 2015, the Income Tax Department alleged that the Rs. 15 crore he received for the film 'Puli', in which he acted, was not shown in the accounts. Based on this, an order was issued imposing a fine of Rs. 1.50 crore on him.
Thalapathy Vijay’s plea to be heard again soon
Thalapathy Vijay filed a case in the High Court in 2022 against this order. At that time, the court had granted an interim injunction. Now, the judge has ordered Vijay's team to file a copy of the order issued in another similar case. After which, the next hearing of the case will be held on October 10th.
