With the Tamil Nadu government banning single-use
plastic
from January 1, a Kollywood film team has hit upon a novel idea to promote their film and also create awareness among the people about avoiding plastic. The team of
Dhadha 87
, which stars
Charuhasan, is planning to distribute the humble
manjapai
directly to the people in a few districts.
Talking about this, the film’s director,
Vijay Sri G, says, “Following the ban, shopkeepers and stores are charging for cloth bags in which customers can carry the items they have purchased. And you cannot blame them because they are following the ban and passing on the additional cost to the customers. My PRO and I were discussing how the common man might not find this affordable, and that’s when he suggested we distribute cloth bags to people free of cost.” They had discussed the idea with the film’s producer, Kalaiselvan, and he, too, was receptive to it. “We decided that we would use part of the budget that we have allocated for promotions towards this,” he says.
The director admits that this is a promotional strategy. “Of course, we are doing this as a way to promote our film, but then, we are also doing that in a way that benefits people,” he reasons.
He informs that the team is looking to distribute about eight lakh large-size cloth bags in seven to eight districts, including Chennai, Coimbatore, Trichy and Madurai. “We are planning to go to the homes of people and give a few bags to each home. We are going to do this by associating with a few self-help groups in each district. We have placed the order and have got a part of it. We intend to start the distribution with Charuhasan sir. We are looking at launching this on or before January 26,” he informs.
