Suriya's 'Kanguva' surprises with Oscar 2025 contender spot despite mixed reception at the box office

Suriya's much-anticipated blockbuster 'Kanguva' was initially met with a somewhat lukewarm response at the box office. While the film had created significant buzz in the lead-up to its release, fans and critics alike voiced concerns about several aspects of the movie. One of the primary criticisms centered around the overwhelming sound design, which some felt overshadowed the narrative. Additionally, the limited screen time given to supporting actors was another point of contention, as many felt the film failed to fully showcase the talents of its ensemble cast. Despite these setbacks and the underwhelming reception it received in theaters, Kanguva has taken an unexpected and exciting turn in its journey. Now, Kanguva has officially secured a spot among the contenders for the Oscars 2025, competing with an impressive 323 global films at present.

Upon the announcement, Suriya’s fans erupted in joy, celebrating the film's unexpected achievement. However, many netizens expressed their surprise, given that the film’s post-release performance was far from what was initially anticipated. Considering its underwhelming box office numbers, the news of Kanguva's Oscar nomination left many astonished. For context, the final box office collection for Kanguva wrapped up at a disappointing Rs 96 crore, just shy of the Rs 100 crore mark, which was easily within reach for a film of this scale and hype. Directed by Siruthai Siva, the movie had a massive production budget of Rs 350 crore, adding to the expectation of a stronger box office performance.

After its theatrical run, the film quickly made its way to streaming platforms. Kanguva, starring Suriya, Bobby Deol, and Disha Patani, premiered on Amazon Prime Video on December 8, allowing audiences to watch the film digitally from that day onward.
