The Supreme Court on January 20, announced that filmmaker Leena Manimekalai will be given protection from further coercive proceedings. According to reports, multiple FIRs were filed against the director after she announced her film ‘Kaali’. The case was heard by the Supreme Court bench that included Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. The statement from the judge reportedly stated that the director will be free from further coercive steps of the complaints filed against her over the ‘Kaali’ row.
Noting that the film director Leena Manimekalai is reportedly in serious harm as multiple FIRs are filed against her, the court requested all states to consolidate the complaints to one location and also the lawyer claimed that action needs to be taken against the death threats, rape and cyberbullying against the director.
In December 2021, the poster of the film ‘Kaali’ was first released and Leena Manimekalai faced a lot of backlash on social media.
