Swathi and Ganja Karuppu was set in the '80s Madurai. Music for the film was by James Vasanthan and the songs were chartbusters, especially Kangal Irandal and Madura Kulunga. Subramaniapuram was dubbed as a cult movie.
Actors and Jai and Subramaniapuram took to their social media pages to talk about the film on the occasion.
The film marked the directorial debut of Sasikumar. Jai had previously starred in Venkat Prabhu’s super hit Chennai 600028.

On the tenth anniversary of the film, Bollywood director
Anurag Kashyap had revealed that the film served as an inspiration for his cult series Gangs of Wasseypur. The film was dubbed in Malayalam and remade in Kannada as Prem Adda.
