Actor Mansoor Ali Khan is of the opinion that the government should build statues for John Pennycuick, the builder of the Mullaperiyar dam thats become a bone of contention between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Despite being British, he has built a dam for our use. And, it is a strong dam that has stood the test of time and will continue to do so. People should be aware of him and the work he has done for us, he feels, adding that his achievements should be taught to schoolchildren.
When asked about the film Dam999, he says, Sohan Roy (the director of the film) has betrayed people. He seems to have portrayed the person responsible for building the dam in a bad light, which is not the case. This sends a wrong message to the public. And the fact that he has titled the film as Dam999 indicates that hes referring to the Mullaperiyar issue.
Sohan Speak The director of Dam999 refutes Mansoor and says, The film does not portray an Englishman in bad light. In fact, that character being referred to is anti-corruption. If Mansoor Ali Khan is stating that my film portrays him poorly, either he is politically motivated or he does not understand English.
Who is John Pennycuick? Born in 1851, this British Army engineer was instrumental in building the Mullaperiyar dam, besides the irrigation works. His effort to build the dam near the Kerala border helped irrigate over three lakh acres of dry land in the districts of Theni, Madurai and Virudhunagar. It is said that many families living in the villages near the dam name their children after him.
