Actor Rahman, who played Jyotikas husband in 36 Vayathiniley, will next be seen in a leading role in the upcoming film Dhuruvangal 16. The film is directed by Karthick Naren, a 21-year-old debutant from Coimbatore. Says Karthick, I did mechanical engineering in college and it was during this time that I developed an interest in filmmaking. I started making short films and after a while, decided I was ready to make a feature film. A visit to Chennai for work on a short film,
Oomai Kurai, and a social media-enabled friendship with Deeraj Vaidy, the director of Siddharths upcoming
Jil Jung Juk (in which Karthick worked for two schedule), furthered this desire.
He shot a pilot film, but decided to turn that into a feature film later and began work on a crime thriller about a disabled cop, which turned into
Dhuruvangal 16. The film is a crime thriller revolving around a 50-something cop whose loses his leg while investigating his final case. The story goes back and forth between that fateful day and the events that happen five years later, over a period of 16 hours, when the cop revisits that day, says the director, who has come up with a non-linear script for this film.
There is no heroine or villain; there will be 16 characters who are all important to the plot, he adds. He says he chose Rahman for the role because he needed an actor who was mature enough to look the part. When I approached him in the last week of August, I was not sure if he would accept, but he said yes, and asked if we could start the shoot immediately. It is his cooperation that helped us begin shoot on September 25 and wrap up filming on November 1, he says.
