The latest chartbuster song Thaai Kelavi, from last Friday's Tamil release Thiruchitrambalam, has become a viral sensation, with many fans dancing to the number in theatres when it plays during the film. The song is picturised on the film's lead stars
Dhanush and
Nithya Menen (with Priya Bhavani Shankar also featuring in it), who dance to it in a village. The situation of the song involves Dhanush's character trying to cheer up his childhood buddy, played by Nithya Menen, and 'affectionately' describing her as 'Thaai Kelavi' (a term popularised in the 1994 blockbuster film Nattamai).
While the song, composed by
Anirudh Ravichander, is an immensely foot-tapping number, it had invited criticism for some of its lyrics, including the term 'Thaai Kelavi', even when its audio had been released.
Now, there has been another fallout of the huge success of the song. Some fans have started to describe Nithya Menen as 'Thaai Kelavi', trying to pass it off as an affectionate remark that shows the love they have for
Shobana, the character that the actress plays in the film — which, many have called the most lovable character in Thiruchitrambalam.
However, this has not gone down well with Nithya Menen, who has mentioned that she dislikes being called by this term, and has requested fans to refrain from doing so. In a video that has now gone viral, the actress can be seen requesting, "Please don't call me 'Thaai Kelavi'. Please don't start calling me 'Thaai Kelavi'. I don't love that name."
That said, the actress seems to have enjoyed dancing to the number during the shoot. "I do dance but romba commercial-a, mass-a naan panna maaten. I avoid dancing, but after a long time, Dhanush made me dance in Thiruchitrambalam. So, I told him, 'Thank you so much. I have not danced in a long time'," she stated in the video.
Even during the promotions of the film, Nithya Menen has maintained that her real-life persona is far removed from that of Shobana and asked audiences to not mix up the two.
