Mysskin is one filmmaker who doesnt mind being politically incorrect and has often aired his views in a forthright manner. At a recent audio launch, the director vented out his frustrations with the censor boards policies and the practice of granting 30 per cent tax exemption for U-rated films. Most filmmakers and producers come to this industry out of passion for the art.
But objecting to swear words and violence hurts creators. A life without swear words and violence is not a life at all. Gabriel Garca Mrquez is considered a great literary figure but swear words or some form of ugliness figure in almost every page of his works. Literature tells the reality of life. A film should be intense and hit you in the guts. For that, a creator needs freedom. When a film tries to be polite when it has to be offensive, then it is cheating the audience, he said.
He revealed that during the censor of his Pissasu, the censor officials were impressed with the film but added that the film has a ghost in it and they can only rate it as A. Pissasu (ghost) has been shown only as a creature to be scared of in films so far. I decided to show it as God, or even above God. The essence of the film was that people should not be scared of the unknown. But it only got A and Bala even scolded me for that, he said.
He added, Censorship is a very important process and the body has a huge responsibility. But because of such instances, I write my script in fear. I have to make my script bland and my cinema is killed even when it is being written. And getting 30% tax exemption is very important as it has a very big financial impact.
He remarked that Indians have a wrong idea about films, that they have to be seen along with children. Only cartoons should be seen with kids. Cinema is a medium for adults. It is a medium that can change your heart. So, do not bring kids to the theatres, unless the film is My Dear Kuttichathan. I dont care if my next film is rated A because of this speech. Im doing a crime thriller next, and it is going to be an A-rated film. I request women and kids not to see it, he concluded.
