Madurai court dismisses petition against Vijay's blockbuster film 'Leo'

The 2023 blockbuster 'Leo,' directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and starring Vijay, continues to make headlines even months after its release. The film, which achieved massive box-office success and grossed approximately ₹600 crore globally, recently faced legal trouble when a petition was filed in the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court seeking its ban.

The petitioner, Rajamurugan from Madurai, raised concerns over the film's portrayal of violence, substance abuse, and controversial themes. According to the petition, 'Leo' depicted excessive violence and glorified the use of weapons, presenting them as a cultural norm. The petitioner further alleged that the film included scenes harmful to societal values, such as the depiction of women and children being targeted in acts of revenge and the use of religious symbols to promote conflicting ideologies.

Additionally, the petition accused the film of promoting illegal activities, including drug trafficking, weapon use, and criminal behavior. It implied that the narrative portrayed the abuse of power with the support of law enforcement, sending a potentially harmful message to viewers. The petitioner demanded a ban on the film across all platforms and controversially called for a psychological evaluation of director Lokesh Kanagaraj for creating such content.

According to Nakkheeran, during the hearing, the legal team representing 'Leo' argued that the petition was baseless and filed for publicity purposes. The defense pointed out that the petitioner’s claims lacked substantial evidence and were not suitable for legal scrutiny. Furthermore, the defense requested the court to dismiss the petition with a penalty, emphasizing that the film adhered to existing censorship guidelines.
