Actress Lizzie Antony, who made a mark with Ram’s Thanga Meenkal, says she’s enjoying the current phase of her career. Having been part of critically acclaimed films like Pariyerum Perumal and Peranbu in the recent times, the actress, who was last seen in Ispade Rajavum Idhaya Raniyum, avers that portraying diverse characters over the years has boosted her confidence and that of the filmmakers who approach her.
She says, “I hail from a family where hardly anybody used to go to movies. Even today, my anna’s children or akka’s children do not watch movies. There are people who ask “nee cinema-laam paarpiya”? It was director Ram who felt I can be a good actor. I have no idea why he felt so. He has this knack of finding suitable people to play the characters he has in his mind. He still calls me “Stella Miss”, the role I essayed in his Thanga Meenkal. I got the break with his next, Taramani — the character of a loud and emotional woman was well received. In his last outing Peranbu, though I had a small role, I was happy when a few people said they anticipated my presence when they identified my voice in it.”
Currently awaiting K13, Naadodigal 2 and an untitled film by Tony Chan, who cranked the camera for Moodar Koodam, Lizzie believes she has come a long way. “I have a great role in Tony’s movie — it has come out beautifully. I play a cop in K13 and a very intense and emotional role in Naadodigal 2,” she says, adding, “I choose from what I’m offered. At the same time, I’m not desperate to act in a lot of movies just for the sake of it. Even if I do only a scene or two in a film, I’m curious to know if that scene belongs to me. I didn’t have many scenes in last year’s most talked-about film, Pariyerum Perumal. But my character made a mark.”
