Ghattamaneni Sivarama Krishna, fondly known as Super Star Krishna, ruled the Telugu film industry for almost four decades, having acted in over 350 films. The living legend of Telugu cinema, who is celebrating his birthday today in Ooty, talks about his journey to success. It all started when director Adurthi Subba Rao, wanted to make Tene Manasulu with newcomers.
Krishna who had then just moved to Chennai to enter the film industry bagged the lead role. The film that was released on March 31, his birthday, became a runaway success. After that there was no looking back for the actor.
In a career filled with super hits, Krishna still terms Alluri Seetharama Raju as his best film ever. I had played this character in my college cultural function and got a prize. I also got inspiration from the song book of NTRs Jayasimha where he was dressed up as Alluri Seetharama Raju in the back cover, recalls Krishna. It was when Akkineni Nageswara Rao, another cinema legend, visited Krishnas college that the young boy was
inspired to enter the film industry.
Soon, he bagged his dream role in the 1974 film, Alluri Seetharama Raju. I still remember we planned to shoot the film in December near Araku and Paderu. The forest area where we were shooting was very cold, yet we had to act bare-chested as the roles required it. Just transporting the equipment into the forest was a big task for us, says Krishna.
While most stars even today struggle to act in just two films a year, Krishna back then released 14 films in just one year 1982. Krishna not only acted and produced his own films, but also introduced many new technologies to the Telugu film industry. The experimental actor was the first one ever to make a Cowboy film in Telugu Mosagallaku Mosagadu. He was also known as the Andhra James Bond, after he brought many James Bond-style, spy movies to the Telugu screen.
