Ever since the Hollywood Hangover films came out and turned out to be superhits, Kollywood seems to have taken a fancy to them. While chatting with comedian Santhanam, he had revealed to TOI that he would love to direct a film like The Hangover in Tamil.
'I do want to direct a movie like The Hangover. That's a longstanding desire. It'll be my own script and I will be acting in it too,' he said.
Todd Phillips' Hangover part 1 came out in 2009 and the comedy starring
Bradley Cooper was a laugh riot. In 2011, the second part released, starring the same cast and that was a runaway hit too. The story of four men on a series of comic adventures caught everyone's attention ' the audience and film industry here alike.
There's currently a buzz that P T Selvakumar's debut directorial venture,
Onbodhula Guru, could be based on The Hangover's premise. Apparently, it's about five guys who get back together for a college reunion and the adventures they face.
Another director, who has expressed keen interest in making a film along similar lines, is
Mankatha director Venkat Prabhu. In fact, fans on social networking sites urged him to remake it with Thala Ajith. Most of Venkat's films are 'boys' films' ' like
Chennai 600028 and
Saroja ' which revolve around a group of young men and their lives which take them on adventures, comic and otherwise.
It's not just K-Town but even Tollywood that has hopped onto the Hangover bandwagon. The Telugu film,
Ace Raja Rani Jackie Mattrum Joker, is reportedly based on this flick, and stars Allari Naresh, Raju Sundaram, Shaam, Vaibhav, with Sudeep in a cameo.
So what makes this Hollywood film so popular here? While some critics abroad ran down the film, people here lapped it up ' it was a fun comedy, though crude at times, that made you laugh your heart out. G Dhananjayan of a corporate production house says, 'The Hangover-type of films have a variety of characters which is otherwise tough to incorporate in regular films. When there are multiple characters, we can offer different types of entertainment through each one of them.
This can be seen in films like
Subramaniapuram, Nadodigal, Thoonga Nagaram and
Sundarapandian and also in future releases like
Settai and
Onbodhula Guru.' So as of now, it looks like comic capers are in in Kollywood and the Hangover obsession continues!
