Kollywood filmmakers who bagged the National Film Awards more than once

Directors are often titled as the captains of the ship and they are considered as the main reason for the success of a film, and Tamil cinema has witnessed several promising directors so far. Few filmmakers have created a niche and have also bagged the National Awards for their good work, not just once but several times. Here we compile a list of Kollywood filmmakers who had bagged the National Film Award more than once.

Late director K Balachander impressed the fans with his unique direction skills, and he had worked with many leading heroes. At the same time, he proved himself as a responsible director by delivering films with a social message. His five directorial films have earned him six National Awards, and he was also awarded Dadasaheb Phalke Award at 58th National Film Awards, for his excellence in cinema.

Mani Ratnam has delivered different films with different genres, and every time he surprises the fans with talent. Five times Mani Ratnam has won the National Film Awards, while two of it for Best Film on National Integration. The continuous success of Mani Ratnam at the National Film Awards transformed him into a legendary director, and it's a wish for many to work under his direction.

R Parthiban is one of the promising directors in Tamil cinema, and he always loves to present himself differently from others. He also loves to bring in new concepts to the cinema and succeeded with it too. Parthiban's last directorial 'Oththa Seruppu' featured only himself, and the fantastic film received the special jury award as Best Film at the 67th National Film Awards.The recent addition sums up his third award at the National Film Awards.

P Madhavan has directed more than 30 films in Tamil and delivered some successful films. P Madhavan has bagged the National Award a couple of times for the films 'Raman Ethanai Ramanadi' and 'Pattikada Pattanama' in the early 1970s. P Madhavan has also remade his own several Tamil films in Hindi.

Bharathiraja, who is known for his excellent directorial won six National Awards, while one from it had come for his Telugu film. Not only National Awards, but Bharathiraja has also bagged several top awards and ruling the Tamil cinema industry with his exceptional films.

Vetri Maaran is one of the successful directors in Tamil cinema, and he never disappointed the fans with his films. Vetri Maaran has mostly worked with Dhanush, and it's always powerful when the duo joins hands together. Including the recent title for 'Asuran', Vetri Maaran has bagged his fourth National Award.
